Over my 30 years’ career in tourism, the industry has globally doubled in size. This rapid growth has also made itself felt in France and Italy, some of the world’s most sought-after travel destinations. For me – engaged in making tourism as sustainable as possible – the need to find places and create experiences remains a challenge that I consider important. It helps, however, to be very familiar with the region and who can offer experiences, products and services that that are authentic, unique, pro-environment and with a personal, friendly touch.

I have travelled widely in France and Italy. While I never tire of exploring Piemonte’s and Liguria’s often hidden culinary and cultural treasures, I also have fallen permanently in love with the charm of the pearl of coastal villages and cities strung along the Cõte d’Azur: The cosmopolitan personality of Cannes and Monaco, the intimacy of old Nice and Villefranche’s squares and harbour scene. While many have started to appreciate the charms and secrets of the back country’s perched villages hiding its medieval culture along narrow, picturesque roads and fortress walls, only few have explored the wilderness and drama of the high country, less tha a an hour’s drive from the beaches. Did I forget the triple A’s of Provence? No way. The cities of Aix, Arles og Avignon are all on the Unesco World Heritage list, and deservedly so. Also not to be missed, the rolling landscape leading to Luberon’s fames.
Or the perfume cellars of Grasse.

And then it’s Corsica. My apologies to the patriotic fishermen, peasants and wine farmers who have tried to keep their beautiful island to themselves – but I’d really  want to take you there, to its intimate, emerald coves, its endless beaches, the soaring peaks reaching more the 3 000 meters, criss-crossed by footpaths and bike trails. Take a ferry or plane from Nice or Toulon  - and I will be sure to reserve bikes and kayaks for you. And a hotel run by the locals, if you so prefer. With a chef who may well have perfected his art in Paris. If you choose to travel by boat from Marseille, then you must set aside a couple of days in a the Mediterranean’s most legendary port city, which has recently restored its well-worn harbour, adding museums and galleries without losing its identity, its superb restaurants and cool cafes and bars.
